I’ll never forget one late September evening during the Harvest Moon. As the sun disappeared behind the Blue Ridge Mountains, a full moon began rising on the opposite horizon. It was one of those rare evenings where everything came together perfectly—the light, the weather, and a couple who completely embraced the experience. They laughed, explored, danced across the mountaintop, and simply enjoyed being together.

Years later, those are still some of my favorite images we’ve ever created.

That’s what I love most about Black Balsam. No matter how many times I photograph an elopement here, it never feels exactly the same. Some evenings the mountains glow gold, other days the summit disappears into rolling clouds, and sometimes the wind becomes part of the story. Every visit feels unique.

It offers something that’s surprisingly hard to find in one location: a magical pine forest, panoramic mountain views, dramatic rocky overlooks, and an easy adventure that feels much more remote than it actually is.

One of my favorite things about photographing here is the variety. Within a short hike, you can experience towering evergreens, open alpine-like mountaintops, rolling Blue Ridge vistas, and some of the most beautiful sunsets in western North Carolina.

Your adventure begins in a beautiful pine forest where sunlight filters through the trees before opening onto expansive mountaintops overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Best Time of Year to Elope at Black Balsam

Late May & June

One of my favorite times of year.

Everything is lush, green, and vibrant after spring. Temperatures are comfortable, and the mountain landscape feels incredibly alive.

Summer

Summer is beautiful, especially if you’re trying to escape the Asheville heat.

Black Balsam is often 10–15 degrees cooler, making it one of our favorite warm-weather locations.

The only downside?

Sunset doesn’t happen until much later in the evening.

Late September & Early October

If I had to pick one favorite…

This would be it.

Early fall brings cooler temperatures, incredible evening light, and the first hints of autumn color without the peak-season crowds later in October.

Early Spring

Personally, this is my least favorite season.

While still beautiful, the landscape often looks more wintry than spring-like, with fewer greens than couples usually expect.

Weather at Black Balsam

One thing we’ve learned after photographing hundreds of elopements here:

Never judge the day by the forecast.

Some of our favorite images have happened under dramatic storm clouds, rolling fog, and soft mountain mist.

If the summit is completely socked in, we can often find beautiful weather just a few minutes away along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The only weather that keeps us off the mountain is lightning.

Expect Some Wind (And Embrace It!)

Black Balsam almost always has at least a little breeze.

Sometimes it’s gentle.

Sometimes it’s dramatic.

Instead of fighting it, we encourage couples to embrace it. Wind creates beautiful movement in dresses, veils, and hair, making photographs feel natural and full of life.

Some of my favorite images from Black Balsam happened because of the wind—not despite it.

What to Wear

Because of the elevation, temperatures are usually 10–15 degrees cooler than Asheville.

Even during summer, I recommend bringing a light jacket or cozy wrap for after sunset.

Good footwear is also important.

The trail begins with smaller gravel before becoming rockier as you approach the summit. Hiking boots, sturdy sandals, or comfortable shoes are always a better choice than heels.

(And yes…it’s okay if your dress gets a little dirty. That’s part of the adventure, and dresses can always be cleaned afterward.)

Bringing Guests

While Black Balsam can accommodate small groups, my favorite experiences are almost always just the two of you.

That said, we welcome up to 10 guests.

For couples bringing elderly family members or anyone with mobility concerns, one of my favorite alternatives is holding the ceremony right in the beautiful pine forest near the parking area before heading to the summit for couples portraits afterward.

It’s a wonderful way to include everyone without requiring the full hike.

Black Balsam has become one of the most popular mountain locations in North Carolina.

If your schedule allows, I strongly recommend choosing a Monday through Thursday elopement.

Weekdays provide a much quieter and more intimate experience.

Not nearly as far as you might think! You don’t have to hike all the way to the summit to have incredible mountain views. We use several beautiful areas around Black Balsam, and we help couples choose the best option based on mobility, guests, weather and how adventurous they want their day to be.

What is the best time of day to elope at Black Balsam?
We usually love the evening, especially close to sunset. The open landscape gets gorgeous light and you can often watch the mountains change completely as the sun gets lower. The ideal timing varies throughout the year, so we plan each elopement around the season and sunset time.

Late spring through fall is generally our favorite time at Black Balsam. Summer brings lush greenery and wildflowers, while fall can be absolutely beautiful with changing color. Mountain weather is unpredictable, and that’s something we’re very used to working with. Sometimes a little rain simply means umbrellas and incredible moody photos. Other times we’ll adjust the timeline or location if conditions warrant it. We watch the weather closely leading up to every outdoor elopement and help make the call based on the actual conditions rather than panicking over an early forecast.

Is Black Balsam crowded?
It can be, especially on beautiful weekends and during peak fall color. That’s one reason timing matters so much. We plan around the season, day of the week and time of day whenever possible to give our couples a more peaceful experience.
